When you're getting started and your goal is to build a top home based business, there are some big land mines to watch out for. When people ask me what are the biggest mistakes that budding home based small business entrepreneurs make, I can easily list many!

In this article I'll list the Four Foolish Follies that can quickly sabotage your ability to build a successful work from home company.

1. Foolishly Spending Cash. I'm listing folly as the first of the fabulous four because I see it most often, and it is the most deadly in terms of being able to hi-jack your at home based business success. Unless you've got unlimited funds, then you need to watch you cash like a hawk.

Know every expense that goes out and where it goes. Spending money on flashy cars, and fancy houses when you're starting to earn extra money from home can get you into real trouble when you need capital to grow your business.

Spend money on only those things that will either (a) save you money in the long run, or (b) contribute to bringing in income and increasing the bottom line.

2. Failure to Define and Manage Your Goals. This folly may actually be the most important of the Foolish Four. If you don't clearly define your top home business goals, you will have no clear direction of where you are headed.

Once you've got clear goals, you need the ability to communicate them to those around you. As you start a new home based small business, you're going to want to clearly communicate your goals and mission to your family. This will bring them in to the process and it will ensure that they realize that you are not home to "play" or work on the "honey do" list, you are there to work on your business.

It helps to set those boundaries early and stick to them. Establish a signal your family will readily recognize as you're "at work" and are not available to be disturbed for trivial things.

3. Failure to Provide a Professional Image. Yep, now that you've started your work from home company, and you can go to work in your PJ's if you want, you still must project a professional image to those outside your home.

If you want to be taken seriously as someone who is in the at home based business of providing high quality products or services, you've got to look at yourself from the outside. Take a look at you from your customer's perspective.

Do you have a great phone answering protocol? Do you share the phone with the rest of the family (Gosh, I hope not!). Do you have professional email signatures, what about professional brochures, and business cards?

If you're business is done primarily on the internet, is your presence professional. Have you got a great web presence with all the right protocols that set you up as an expert in your field? Do you have a way for people to contact you that is monitored every day. Do you have stellar customer service?

All of these components will set your top home based business apart from your competition. It's the attention to detail that will give your new work from home company much needed credibility.

4. Failure To Select the Right Business For Your Personality. This foolish folly is the easiest to overlook when you're just getting started. There are so many business opportunities that look good, and seem to be a quick way to make great cash.

But if you've failed to match the right business up with your personality traits, you are setting yourself up to fail from the get go.

If you hate selling, don't buy-in to an MLM. If you don't have patience, don't start a preschool!

Take a good look at your personality traits and make sure your personality type is right for the business you've selected. It will make your life so much more enjoyable.
